Canadian organizations responding to rising food prices

CBC tells us that World Vision is forced to downsize its food support program in the face of rising food prices. This is not good news for the hungry. I couldn’t find more information about this from the World Vision News Centre, nor on their Food Security page, but I suspect we’ll see something pop up there soon.

My next question was: what other Canadian organizations are responding to the food crisis, or being affected by it?

CRWRC is responding to the food crisis and warns that:

If the problem of escalating food prices continues and CRWRC is not able to obtain additional resources to help pay for the food it distributes, cutbacks in programs could happen …

The Canadian Foodgrains Bank is in a similar position:

The Canadian Foodgrains Bank has estimated that the amount of food aid we can provide will decline by at least 25 percent and probably much more unless we can secure additional funding. We will be appealing to our donors and the Canadian government for additional funding. We need at least $5 million in additional funding to maintain current levels of programming, and even more than that to address the growing need caused by rising prices.

Just two days ago Canadian Red Cross launched a Food Security Crisis appeal:

In response to this rising crisis, the Canadian Red Cross is appealing to the public for donations in support of a new five-year strategy from the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent to scale up food security programmes in 15 African countries - in addition to Canadian Red Cross programs in several African nations.

Let’s hope we see more agencies come on board as more people are getting hungrier.
