Canadians and rising food prices

Tomorrow Bev Oda, Minister of International Cooperation will will make a major announcement, presumably about Canada’s commitment to WFP.  According to CTV, there are hints that she could be talking about something in the order of another $100 million in food aid.

And at the same time CBC tells us Canadians, who have been mostly insulated against rising food costs, can expect to feel the impact these increasing prices within the next few months.

A big question for Canadian nonprofits now must be whether Canadians will give generously to hungry people around the world when their own budgets are becoming stretched.  As Canadians experience “expensive food”, will their empathy with the poor motivate them to give more?  Or will their own shrinking buying power make them more cautious?

Jeff Brooks encourages us with news that religious people, who tend to be the big givers to charities, don’t see donating as a luxury.  They will continue to give in accordance with their income.
